How to Win at Timber Town: Strategy & Tips

If you love clever two-player games that feel cosy but ever-changing, Timber Town has quickly become one of my favourites. In this delightful river drafting game, you are a beaver architect grabbing tiles from a river and placing them into your town — with scoring conditions that change almost every game.
The river flows, tiles shift, and strategic decisions must be made every turn. After many enjoyable plays around the table, here are some of the strategies that help me build the best beaver town and score the most points.
Think Ahead — River Drafting Is All About Timing
At the start of each round, several building tiles sit on the river, drifting toward you. You choose one tile and place it into your town, but the trick is: you must place it in the same column from which you took it.
That simple rule makes timing everything. If you take a tile too early, you might miss out on better ones flowing later. But wait too long, and your opponent might snag it first. Winning here is about watching the flow, not just the tile you want right now.
Sometimes it’s worth reserving a tile with your raft token so you can grab it later when the column shifts in your favour.
Placement Matters — Column Strategy Wins Games
Because tiles must go into matching columns, you’re essentially solving a spatial puzzle as you play. You’re not just drafting, you’re placing strategically for future objectives.
Before spending, think:
Will this tile help complete multiple scoring objectives?
Does it block a column I need?
Can it create a path or shape that earns bonus points?
This spatial awareness keeps Timber Town fresh and fun.
Plan for Variable Objectives
One of the things I love most about this game is the variability. Each session gives you different scoring objectives — sometimes focusing on colours, sometimes pathways, sometimes beaver placement.
Start each game by studying those objectives carefully. Aim to score in at least two categories rather than betting everything on one — balanced town building often beats tunnel vision.
Don’t Forget Special Tokens
Tiles aren’t the only thing in play. Crane, dam, and raft tokens let you leap out of a tricky column constraint or grab multiple tiles in one turn. Using these at the right moment — especially to nab a tile that completes a big scoring combo — can make all the difference.
It’s easy to overlook these tools when you’re focused on the river… but clever use gives you real strategic edge.
